Courage, bravery etc. – These words are often taken to mean as ‘acting with a lack of fear’.
I think what they really mean is – ‘acting despite fear’.

Why not both? Is a person not brave if s/he fearlessly does what an average person would not? Conquering one’s fears might be braver under some circumstances, but not fearing is brave in and of itself too. Anyhow, that’s my one cent’s worth. 🙂
