The Lovers

This painting ‘The Lovers’ by Rene Magritte is one of the most intensely revealing, yet abstract one on the subject of love. On a casual glance, it looks absurd. But on a little reflection, it reveals a lot of layers.

It makes you stop for a while and think about relationships we form with people we are closest to, the things that remain intentionally unrevealed, the secrets that shroud us, or perhaps the relationship itself that remains hidden due to societal constraints.

What does it reveal to you?

  1. Seems to me they are in a relationship, yet they are hiding many things from each other.. They make love, yet they are far apart sometimes… they seem to be together, yet forced to be so…

        1. I often think – did these artists ever think, while painting or writing, that their work would be deciphered in so many different ways?

          1. yes.. I wrote a poem on this subject.. “painting on the wall” its the same theme.. when the artist paints, what is it in their mind and what the admirer thinks of it.. its fascinating

            1. I think I did read it, but I’ll see it again anyway.
Beauty is, rightly, in the eyes of the beholder.
In my opinion, everybody is an artist in a way

  2. I love abstract art, which is always open to viewer interpretation. For me, this painting illustrates two lovers who are still hiding from each other. It’s actually the opposite of my next poem which I’ll be posting tomorrow 🙂

  3. Deep.. From my point of view, it looks like people in love who have chosen to remain blind to each other, in terms of faults and stuff. Which could either be a positive or negative thing. But it surely is an interesting picture
